KINGDOM OF AN OUTCAST
Inspired by outsider art, I have started my collection by searching for several kinds of outcasts. Artists who belong to outsider art live on the margin and create their own world. Just like Bedouins and wanderers they are all outcasts in society. The stuff that wanderers take with them to warm them in cold nights, inspired the voluminous forms of the collection. The elaborated embroidery and handwork are common elements in the clothing of the Bedouins and in many textile works of outsider artists. Outsider artists use it often in an imperfect way with free interpretation of handwork techniques. This characteristic, next to the very crowded visual language, are some things I also wanted to incorporate in the collection. Finally my muse Renske is also an outcast, but one who does not mind to being one. She does whatever she wants in her isolated place where she lives,. This is the kind of person I wanted to show, a self-conscious outcast, maybe not accepted by their environment, but king of their own world.
